81) WESTERN CUBA (1 to 8 April 2017)

In Cuba, moving around is a slow exercise: no faster than 50km/h. I went from Holguin to Trinidad overnight in a bus that was quite comfortable. Trinidad de Cuba is a small touristic city (40,000 population). Despite the increasing number of visitors, the place keeps its charm and authenticity: cobbled streets, music, etc…Horses are still utilised a lot:Trinidad is alive at night! At the famous Casa de la Musica, a show is proposed every night. A bit further, an underground nightclub (in a cave!) gives a unique party experience: I loved it! Music isn’t audible from outside.Baseball is a very popular sport in Cuba:With Elena and Maria, Portuguese twin sisters who live in England, we went to a waterfall in mountains nearby:Lovely dinner with French German couple:The day after, I decided to rent a bike and go on my own. Trusting my navigation skills, I got lost, but that was great fun:Afternoon on the beach:And I finished the Cuba trip with the capital, Havana. By far the largest city on the island (2.1 million people, about 20% of the total population), Havana has a legendary aspect that has been displayed by numerous movies and attracts more and more tourists every year, looking for typical architecture and lifestyle.Nice view from one of the highest towers in the city, the Jose Marti memorial (109m). For information, Jose Marti is a national hero who played an important part in the independence against Spain in the 19th century (officially dated 1898).I walked a lot (about 20km every day), on the Malecon along the sea, from a monument to another one, and in the small streets of the old city.Everywhere you go, anytime of the day, you hear some music:I mentioned this in the previous article: passport is needed to request an internet card. With the code provided, you can connect to the wifi in some public places, this square for example:Havana also has some wonderful buildings such as the Capitol (that looks like the US Capitol) and the Gran Teatro, built respectively in 1929 and 1915.For my very last night, I did something for the first time in my life: put a shirt on, had a huge Cohiba cigar and a glass of my favourite Cuban rum, and watch a World famous Cuban ballet in the Gran Teatro:Cuba was on my list of places to visit. It was not really planned during this World tour, but I am glad I did it. Luck was with me and I had fantastic weather the whole time. 2 weeks aren’t enough, though. I would recommend another week: I am missing Vinales and the Western peninsula, where most of the tobacco is produced. A good reason for another trip!Cuba is fantastic land, very different from any country I have visited. It was a pleasure to meet and discuss with most of Cubans (I talked a bit about politics in the previous article). I write ‘most of Cubans’ because I also met annoying individuals that are not very honest and only interested in the dollars foreigners carry around. I have enough experience to see them coming, but it is unpleasant after a while. Other than this and basic food, everything else (music, dancing, landscape, etc…) is a positive experience for one looking for a flashback in History.

Next destination: Mexico!!!
