40) CUSCO, PUNO AND TITICACA LAKE (21 and 22 September 2016)

I have been moving every day for a week now, it’s time for a day off in Cusco. and a bit of city visiting. Cusco and around are often said the best region of Peru, and it is worth staying a week. But I don’t have time: the temporary permit of the moto is going to expire and I need to get out of the country in a few days.

In Cusco, I was staying in a ‘party hostel’. Not the best way to meet locals, but great for free shots 😉Cusco, with a population of more than 400,00, is located at 3,400m above the sea level. It was the capital of the Inca Empire.I shared a beer with my Swiss friends Amandine and Jeromine in the highest Irish pub in the World!img_5574 Also, visit of the San Pedro market: img_5566 img_5567In Peru, 3,000 species of potatoes!img_5564But it’s time to go. I woke up early for the 360km to get to Puno. The road is high, forecasts said rain and snow… but it was actually the fastest and the easiest drive. Sunny, and straight on the plateau.Little lunch break at 4,000m! I always ask for boiling water before I leave, so I can prepare instantaneous noodles, tea, etc…Arriving in Puno, with a great view on the Titicaca lake:Often, I drive KLaRa, the motorbike, inside the hotels:, so she can sleep covered:For the first time, I arrived ahead of schedule! And I had time to join a boat tour on the lake. At 3,800m, the Titicaca lake is the highest navigable lake in the World. It the largest in South America: 200km long, 60km wide, 14 times the size of the Leman Lake in Geneva! The main touristic attraction is the Uros Islands, fabricated by the Uru people from reed. Life there is very, very simple. Electricity from solar panels, no hot water. And the water temperature in the lake is around 10degrees…There are 3 official languages in Peru: Castilian (Spanish), Quechua and Aymara. The last 2 are the historic languages from the mountains, very, very different from Spanish. There are also many other dialects in the Jungle. In this region, people speak Aymara. Some don’t speak Spanish at all.I joined my companions of the tour for diner: an excellent trout from the lake, with Peruvian music. For my last night in Peru…
