65) PUNTA ARENAS AND USHUAIA !!! (9 to 15 December 2016)

El Chalten, El Calafate and Torres del Paine were the last ‘can’t miss’ stops on the way down. After Puerto Natales, we left the Road 40 and rode the End of the World road.Punta Arenas is the big Chilean Southern city, about 130,000 people live there. We stayed 1 night only. With Tom, we took our last ferry, 2 hours to reach the Island of Tierra del Fuego! It is exciting. Feeling is indescribable… the Southern tip is a goal, a geographical objective, and we have never been that close.Mountains are smaller and smaller, but still sharp, and snow capped. And here I am! Since Santiago, after 3 weeks, 4,500km on the road and 6 ferries, I made it to Ushuaia, the Southern most city in the World, the 10 December 2016.25km further, is the end of the road, in the ‘End of the World’ National Park. This trip has been absolutely fantastic, in all ways. Shared with Tom, we had only 1 day of heavy rain, not much wind. Wonderful roads, stunning hikes, great people… I am missing superlatives so I’ll just stop here.Ushuaia is a 60,000 people city. It is the Southern most city in the World, at Latitude 55. It is not that far South compared to Northern latitudes (equivalent to Scotland). But the Southern Hemisphere is colder than he Northern. Mainly because there is less land. And there is no land between Antartica and Ushuaia, exposed to wind and cold streams. Luckily, we are at the beginning of summer: the sun goes down at 11pm, and tempartures are around 10degrees. The day after I arrived, it was however 2 degrees and snowing! But I also had a couple of great days, perfect for hiking.Cruises to Antartica leave from Ushuaia. Last minute deals are around 7,000usd, but I think normal prices are around 13,000usd for a normal trip (2 or 3 weeks). Another time! The best place to eat Pacific giant crab:Ushuaia is also the place where long time travellers meet. From left to right:

  • Tom, from Holland, who shared the last 3000km with me. He came all the way from Alaska in 8 months and 65,000km. I met him in Bolivia.
  • Fred, Canadian, started in Santiago (5000km) and is still at the beginning of his trip (you can see from the hair length!). A lot of respect for him: he is on a small 125cc. We met in El Chalten, 1 week before arriving.
  • Brian, Canadian, who has been on the road for 18 months. 75,000km I believe, in a 4WD camper. I met him in Bolivia and saw him again in Chile.
  • I can’t remember the name of the girl, but I think she came all the way from the US in a 2WD van.

And many more! Fantastic stories to be shared…Time for Fred to leave:Tom is going to Buenos Aires to ship its moto back to Holland. I will see him again, in Holland!Dave also came all the way from Alaska, where he is from, on a BMW 1200. And he would like to ship his motorbike to South Africa and makes his way up to Europe.Boca Juniors football team won the Buenos Aires derby against River Plate. Impressed with the celebrations 3000km from the Capital! Here is a map of my ride so far. 12,500km and counting. One of the reasons I was very late on the blog is because my laptop died. I will get a new one for Christmas.
