The weather in Chile is very different from the weather in Argentina. Clouds coming from the West are held by the mountains and it rains a lot. Once we crossed the Andes, the climate is dry and arid. It took us 2 days to ride from Perito Moreno to El Chalten.
Sometimes a bit straight and boring, the road was however beautiful especially when we were getting close to the mountains. We started experiencing the Patagonian wind. Not too strong for now.

And yes, we are on the famous Road 40!
Perito Moreno and Gobernador Gregores are 2 small cities with very little interest. In the pampa, exposed to wind, Tom and I only tried to rest and eat well:
Some parts are not paved, and side wind makes it tricky:
We arrived in El Chalten under the clouds. It rained a lot over night and in the morning, so we just spent some time doing nothing.
Why El Chalten? Because it is a wonderful little village stuck in the Patagonian mountains, and there is fantastic hiking there. In the afternoon, the weather got better, I took tent, sleeping bag, cooking gear and food, and I went up to Lago Torre, 10km further.

Lago Torre, with the glacier in the background. Because we are far South already, in December, the sun goes down late (10pm).
There I caught up with 2 Russian girls, Liliya and Masha, who live in the US. We cooked together.
The night was coldish (0 degree). We went to watch the sunrise at 5am. Without all my mental capacities, I went for a swim in 0 degree water. Well, not a swim, but I went in the water, and I did not stay long, but the pic is here to prove it:
This day, with my bagpack, I walked 33km: to the Torre glacier, then to Mont Fitzroy. It could have been even better with a bit less clouds. Being picky now…
Mont Fitzroy needle tips are hidden in the clouds:
The walk, the sun, the wind, the atmosphere, the views… everything was perfect! Maybe a bit too many tourists near the lake.
The way down to El Chalten:
And it’s only when I got back to El Chalten that I saw Mount Fitzroy cleared of all clouds.
Tom had done a hike too this day and we needed beers and pizzas to recover:
Honestly one of the very best hikes I have done in my all trip, one of the best places I have been. I definitely recommend spending some time in El Chalten. For the surroundings and for the cute city.
