After a great overnight stay on Chiloe, I went to Puerto Montt, the start of the Carretera Austral. The Carretera Austral is a road built the 80’s during Pinochet’s dictatorship to connect the Southern populations of Chile. It is a fantastic 1200km windy road that goes along the sea, the fjords, the mountains and the glaciers. It is constantly in construction: some parts are paved, the others are being paved.
Tom is from Holland and has been travelling on a Triumph 800 for nearly 8 months. His goal is to reach the most Northern point of the Americas to the most Southern, and he is almost there. I had met him in Bolivia 6 weeks earlier and we caught up in Puerto Montt. We are about to ride the next 3,500km together.
The first 2 days are quite slow because there are 3 ferries to take. This region of the World is very humid and we had a lot of rain to start with. Overnight in Hornopiren to catch the first ferry in the morning. Then overnight in Chaiten.
The second ferry is 6 hours long. Unfortunately, clouds blocked the views on the summits.
We always meet great people when travelling. This German couple is walking through Patagonia during 3 months, with their daughter.

The hostels there are actually houses in which owners rent a room or 2. So we ended up living with different families every night, sometimes sharing diner.
In Chile, there is a button ‘Football’ on the remote!
Sunset in El Chalten… the weather is getting better:
And the sun is back! Fantastic weather on the road that is more and more beautiful at each corner. With Tom, we visited the National Park of Pumalin:

A few pictures on the road:
I love the blue colour of the glaciers rivers:
Every day, we ride between 200 and 250km. Some parts are quite slow. Sometimes we have to wait 20 minutes because of road works. And we also go for a few hikes and stop to take pictures.
