Mainly pictures in this article! As previously described, Rio is a city like no other: bays, beaches, cliffs, mountains, lakes, Rio isn’t a boring flat city with a river crossing it. The beach is part of the Cariocas’ life and it is common to go there after work between colleagues, friends, or for a date. There are plenty of them: Botafogo, Urca, Leblon, Barra… but I only spent some time in Flamengo, Copacabana and Ipanema.
Flamengo is the closest from where I was staying (Gloria). It is beautiful, but because it is in the bay, I have been told the water is a bit dirty, and there are no waves.
Great however for a football game:
Or for a run in the morning. I had never seen a stonemade gym!
At the end of the beach, the Bay of Batafogo:
Copacabana is probably the most famous. The area is always full of life with restaurants and bars. For the Olympics, it was often crowded with tourists.
But the beach is beautiful, and surfers enjoy the waves.
At the end, the Fort of Capacabana:
And finally, the best one: Ipanema. Combined with Leblon beach, it is the longest. And I find the scenery beautiful. The 2 mountains in the background are the 2 Brothers, climbed in the last article.
Different posts are located along the beach, serving as reference markers. And they all have their history: Post 8 is more touristic. Post 8.5 is more for gay people. Post 9 is more for local. Post 10/11 is where richer people go…
This photo is taken not far from the 2 Brothers:
The beach is a great place to meet people, no doubt about that 😉
