7) ICELAND SOUTH COAST 1 (4 June 2016)

Saturday morning, a bit hangover like most of the mornings lately, I picked up the rental car and my new American mate Kurt. The objective is to drive around Iceland, on the ring road. 6 days for 1600km, which is pretty is easy. But we also want to visit, hike, relax, etc…Kurt and I:The first stop is Seljalandsfoss waterfall, eventually one of my favourites of all the waterfalls I saw in Iceland. That one isn’t the tallest (60m) or the largest, but you can walk behind, and it is quite magical! The second one, Skogafoss waterfall, is about as tall (60m), but much larger, and the view on the flat lands at the top is endless.Because we are going around the island anti-clockwise, you will see on the pictures that mountains are on the left hand side and the sea is on the right hand side. On the South Coast, sea and mountains are far apart, unlike other places with steep cliffs diving into the ocean. This little church in the middle of nowhere is just too cute:Iceland is a pretty much round island. In the centre, mountains. At the top of the mountains, a huge glacier. When the glacier melts, waterfalls like that one are countless. We took pictures of the first ones we saw, they are so pretty. But after a while, we just couldn’t be bothered anymore!A bit further, we stopped on a famous black sand beach. The sand is black because of volcanic rocks. Cliffs on the beach show basalt lava flow structures, similar to those you can see in Northern Ireland.I travel light, I have only a 10kg carry-on bag with me, I will prepare an article about my bag when everything is up to date. Of course, I don’t carry a tent and a sleeping bag. And to be honest, camping in Iceland did not cross my mind for a second. But if I can give a piece of advice for whoever wants to travel cheap in Iceland: go camping and it will cost you $10 or $15 a night. A bed in a dorm with sheets cost $50 to $60. Nothing is cheap in Iceland!

That first night out of Reykjavik, we found some cute cottages in Kalfafell and Kurt could stay in the tent. We also met fellow travellers: hitchhiking, biking, or, like us, driving. We met a super friendly French couple from La Reunion Island and went for a quick hike in the evening. We could walk over one arm of the glacier, with a fantastic sunlight. Good thing about Iceland at this time of the year is that the night does not fall at all, so you can walk, bike or drive 24 hours a day! Let’s go to bed after that, tomorrow is a big day!
